Four more questions answered

Reports can now tell you what to buy, what to check, what you never use and where it all is.

Open a line to read the whole story behind it.

  • New A Running low report lists what is missing from where it belongs, and how many you have somewhere else.

A new report lists what is missing from where it belongs. Open a location, and beside anything kept there you can now say how many should be there - "the bench drawer should never be down to fewer than four filters". Drop below it and the place appears on the Running low report, biggest gap first, with what is there, what should be, and - the useful part - how many of the same thing you have somewhere else. That last figure is the difference between a shopping trip and a walk to the shed. It is said per place rather than per product on purpose: four wanted at the bench is a real answer whether or not there are forty in the shed, which a single number for the whole warehouse could never express.

  • New A report lists the places you have not counted lately, longest first.

A new report lists the places you have not checked lately, longest first, with how much is standing on each and when it was last counted. Counting a whole site counts every shelf inside it, so a shed you went through in one go does not leave its shelves looking neglected. Only a stocktake you actually finished counts as a check - one you started and left open is somebody part-way through looking. Places nobody has ever checked come first, which is usually where the numbers have quietly gone wrong.

  • New A report lists what you have been storing without using, over a period you choose yourself.

A new report lists what you have been storing without using. Pick how long counts as a while - three months to two years, a year to begin with - and it shows what has not been touched in that time, how much of it there is, and when it was last used. Things that arrived and never moved at all come first. A year rather than six months by default, because the decorations, the camping gear and the winter tyres are untouched for half of every year and none of them is clutter. Something you have stopped stocking but still have plenty of stays on the list, marked, because that is exactly what this report is for.

  • New A report shows every place holding something, fullest first, with everything inside a site added up.

A new report shows every place holding something, fullest first, with how many different things are there and how many all told. Pick a site and it adds up everything inside it, however deeply your shelves are nested - the answer to "how much is in the shed" that no other screen gave. Each place is named by its whole path, so you can go and stand in front of it. The count of different things at the top counts each thing once even when you keep it in three places, and the page says so, because that figure and the column beside it are answering different questions.

  • New Say how many of something fit in a place; nothing is ever refused, the shelf simply says it is over.

You can also say how much of something fits in a place, in the same box: write twenty and the app knows the drawer holds twenty of those. Both numbers are notes to yourself, not rules. If twenty-five turn up, all twenty-five are recorded and the shelf simply says it is five over; if the drawer is empty, nothing stops you picking the last one out. Nothing is ever refused, because the box is already on the shelf by the time you are typing, and an app that would not write that down would just be wrong about your things. The Where things are report counts the places that are over, and planning a shelf is something the owner and anyone who helps run the place can do - not somebody who only moves stock. While adding it we found that the location page had never shown what the last operation did; it does now.

Dates, not deadlines

Each date is the day that work landed, and nothing more. It is not a support window, not a promise that a version stays available, and not a schedule for the next one.
